Shame on you Rafa!!

As those around me will know, I am an ardent fan of Rafa.

But Rafa's on-court actions in the past few tournaments have made me question his sportsman's spirit.

It doesn't suit a player of Rafa's stature to walk out of a game when he's losing it. I am not contesting the fact that Rafa is injured or not. But still, if he is not completely sure about his fitness, he shouldn't be taking part in a Grand Slam. Not taking part would have been better than exiting the way he did. It was really disgraceful.

I agree that with his injuries and loss of the French Open Crown last year, he must be low on confidence. But then, great players do have their ups and downs, but then they bounce back with all their charisma. Federer would serve as a good case at hand. He lost his Wimbledon Crown to Nadal. Lost in so many encounters against him. The newcomers had started thrashing him on court. His confidence must have reached rock-bottom levels but then, bounce back he did. And he did it in a big way. He did not chicken out or cower during his defeats. That is grace!!

Rafa is playing in interesting times. He's young, he's good. He has the fighting spirit. He shouldn't let his injuries or confidence get the better of him. Go Rafa, Go!! We are still behind you, just don't let us down with your on-court antics like u did at the Australian Open 2010.

The Swinging Balance

Sorry folks!! Sorry for the brief hiatus (I know, I know.. it was a pretty loooong one this time).. But what to do?? At times, it was an issue of access and at others, of not gettin anything to write about. But then now I am back with this post. :)

Naah, this post has nothing to do with a swing nor a see-saw and not even a balance. So what's this all about??
**Ohh!! Always! Always!!! Does this guy ever, ever get to the topic right away!! Huh!!!**

But then that's what this post is all about!! :)

This is the month of the scales. Of Libra.. Of Librans... THE BALANCE! Gettin the point?? No right!! So read on!! :)

Many of us, every morning when the newspaper arrives, check out the Astrology section in it before leaving for college or office. And most of us, at some point of time in our lives (mostly during our teens ;) ), have read one of the umpteen number of Sun Sign books available in the market (Linda Goodman being my fav!! ;) ). Every time one has a crush on a boy/girl, and they don't know each other all that well, these books serve as a guide to the other person's character. DISCLAIMER: Now whether the book guides in the right direction is a topic open for discussion. ;)

PART I
Now where were we!! Yeah, the Sun Sign book. :P
**Uffff!!! Bahut pakaata hai yaar yeh!! ;) **
Linda Goodman's Sun Signs describes a typical Libran as one with an ambivalent character. Remember, The Balance?? A misnomer for sure. Completely unbalanced. First swinging this way and then the other, just to tilt again to the first one, and so on... On and On.. Until Finally!! it attains equilibrium.

PART II
For those in the knowhow, they will vouch for my interest in watching Hindi movies.. I don't really watch them until and unless forced by my dear friends, which is to say, quite often, when those dumb comedy movies release (Sorry guys!! But All offense meant.. :P ). And I don't read the reviews for the Hindi movies either. I better get first-hand inputs from my numerous buddies who watch the movies as soon as they are screened in the theatres. Love Aaj Kal was one such movie. My friends watched it and their verdict: Watch it only if you don't have anything else to watch. It's ooookay, but the second half is sort of a drag..

Whoa!! Good Lord, I got such nice friends who spare me the pains of watchin' all the crappy movies that these guys churn out.. (No Dudes, this doesn't include u who have made me suffer those umpteen number of good-for-nothin movies in the hall).

But Diwali being Diwali and holiday being a holiday, me and my friends after enacting Dexter's act in the kitchen in the forenoon, were contemplating on what to do next.. Someone came up with the idea of watchin a movie. And so finally after a lot of debate, we settled on watchin Love Aaj Kal. Got the DVD home.

CONNECTING THE TWO PARTS - PARTS I & II :D
Now comes the crux of this post.. Had I mentioned this line no. at the top, could have spared you the pains of reading till here right!! Ha, Ha!!

Somehow, I liked the movie.. Oops!! How come?? Nope.. No Guys, as you would think, it was not the love angle in the movie which caught my fancy, nor was it the plot. Surprisingly, it were the characters in the movie who became the subjects of my study. ;) Jai. And Meera. Meera, towards the end of the movie, blurts out: "Oh!! What is he doing to me (my mind)". So we will focus on Saif's character in the movie, as according to Deepika's claims, he was the one corrupting her mind.

Saif's character in the film - Jai, is an absolute personification of a typical Libran. Completely Confused!! As to what he/she wants. At times if a Libran justifies a point, the very next moment, he/she can stand up and speak against the topic as well. Some of the world's most famous philosophers are Librans. And yeah, let's not forget our dear politicians (Refer to the Khandala song from Ghulam - Dil bhi saala party badle kaisa hai zamaana).. But whatever stance they take won't be without any logic. They will convince you that their viewpoint is correct guiding you along the path with logic dispersed throughout.

Similar was the Jai in this movie. Be it Jai-Meera's meeting in the coffee shop when they decide on breaking-up the first time or be it the lawn scene before Meera's marriage. Everywhere you can see a Libran who's confused to the core.

But like it almost certainly happens eventually with a Libran, the arms of the scale balance each other out. And so it happened at the end of this movie as well. Saif gets back to his senses, realizes what he wants, returns to India and gets his girl.

So before we reach the point of this post for which you were waiting all this while, that is, The End, I would highly recommend watchin' this movie to others.. Not so much from the point of view of what the title of this movie refers to, but from the point of view of understanding the nature of The Swinging Balance.. ;)

Cheers!!

Beautiful poems

In the normal course of surfing today, came across Avinash Kishore's blog. Below are two of his beautiful compositions. Hope you enjoy them...

A l'il MUSKAAN on Valentines Day

Doesn’t happen much too often with me but this time around, what I wished for, happened within a matter of a few days time (though the time horizon set for this particular activity was flexible).

One fine morning, a couple of weeks back, I told one of my friends.. ‘Dude! I want to do something..’ ‘What’s on your mind’ asked he. ‘I want to spend some time with Cancer patients’, I blurted out…

These days I got loooots of free time, what with this being the last trimester of my MBA studies. And hold on!! I am, like many of my peers, yet to land a job. But the companies, this time around, simply don’t seem to be in a mood to hire people. So every now and then, I start brooding on what to do next, what to do next. And this thing that I told my friend the other morning was one of the things I had been wanting to do for quite some time now (started thinking of this way back when I was working at Bangalore). And now it once again had grabbed an A+ priority.

Fast-forward some days (brooding over this and brooding over that) to 4 days ago… Usually people start ignoring the myriad posters one finds on the college campus’s walls. And if you are in an area where there are multiple colleges (yes.. including Mithibai ;) ), you get to see the posters of various events whenever you look up at the walls. So its not abnormal if you simply start ignoring them. But wait there!! Whats this!! Pink color?? The poster is pink in color. WoW!! Valentines Day!! The day of the Lovers is not very far either.. Hmphhh!! Mithibai must be at it again.. They celebrate a looot many days!! Valentines Day, Rose Day, Ethnic Day, Chocolate Day, Sunday, Monday, this day, that day and what not.. Must be just one of those days. But then isn’t the name of this event a l’il different.. MUSKAAN!! That means a ‘smile’, isn’t it.. Okay!! Now you guys have my attention. I ran through the poster and what I saw was an opportunity which had come knocking at my doorstep. It was an event by the Social Responsibility Forum, College of Commerce (or SRF as we call it), a call for people to spend time with Cancer affected children at the Tata Memorial Hospital on Valentines Day. Wasn’t I looking forward to doing just that. The very next day I registered myself as a volunteer.

Now the wait had started… TICK, TICK! TICK, TICK!! In between, the organisers sent mails with the details for the visit, the itinerary, etc.

Knock, Knock!! Now who’s that??!

Oh yeah!! The D-Day, or so to say - the V-Day, had arrived. The Day I was looking forward to.. since sooo many days (or was it years!!)..

I am a strict believer of reaching a place on-time. I don’t like being late for an appointment. But yes.. there’s a catch there.. I don’t like reaching the place early either. I believe in the JIT philosophy. But nah, no JIT for this one here. For maybe the first time ever, I wanted to be before-time at the venue. Hence I started early from my place.

After I had registered for MUSKAAN, I asked around.. asked a few of my friends whether they would be interested in joining me for MUSKAAN. Unfortunately, everyone seemed to be pre-occupied. But so what!! I was interested. :) Then came this friend of mine. She too, like others, said that she won’t be able to come to the Hospital but that she was interested in the cause. She cited some personal reasons, which I am afraid, convinced me. Hence I didn’t pursue the matter. But she asked whether she could contribute to MUSKAAN in any other manner.. like buying the kids some gift, chocolates, etc. SRF had opened the window for contributions and now the time for that was over. But then, this girl, she took one of the co-ordinators phone number from me, rang up the guy and got permission to send some gifts for the children through me. So I met her on my way to Tata Memorial. I had expected just some chocolates. But then, she handed me a big, heavy package. She had packed in a Valentines Day card, a Diary Milk and a Writing pad together for each of the 28 children I was going to meet. And each of these cards had the hand-written words – “Happy Valentines Day!! To World’s Best Valentine :)”. Your gesture is very much appreciated my friend.. by both me and the other SRF volunteers. It would have been very much better had you handed over the gift packets to the kids yourself. Hope you make it the next time.

I reached the Hospital well before time; so thought of purchasing pens for the children to write with, on the Writing pads. Bought a set of glitter gel pens and proceeded to the Hospital.

The children were on the eleventh floor of the building. When I reached there, I was welcomed by the sound of the latest Bollywood numbers blurting out of the speakers. Balloons were hanging from the ceilings. Organisers were milling around in their Red Ts. I could sense the warmth and enthusiasm these volunteers had brought in with them. The event had been divided into three sessions of one hour each. Every hour a new set of 10 volunteers would come up and interact with the children. The first batch was supposed to put the children at ease, establish a rapport. Once the party mood had set in, the second batch would come. The children would be taken into the playroom and a game would be organized for them. There would also be a joker for the kids’ entertainment. The last batch would then come in, interact with the kids, show them magic tricks and distribute more gift items. In between all this, the kids would be given refreshments like cake, biscuits, chips, etc. Every detail had been carefully planned…

So as scheduled, me and the others in the first batch visited the Children’s ward. The view there was heart-rending. There were children of different age-groups. The youngest of them being just 6 months old (God!! She was so small.. Not her at least!!!). The oldest being in the ninth grade. Though many of them mustered smiles when we handed them the gifts and the chocolates, the pain and suffering these children endure was quite evident. Intravenous fluids being administered to the l’il ones. Some of them had gone bald while the other few, really small ones, got afraid whenever anyone approached them just ‘coz of the fact that they thought that someone was approaching them to administer the injections. We interacted with the children, trying to put them at ease and cheering them up.

Before we knew it, the time was over and the second batch had arrived at the hosp. Hospital, being a hospital, shouldn’t be noisy. Hence we, the first batch, had to move out. With an overwhelming feeling to stay back with the children in our hearts, we bade goodbyes. Am sure the next batches would have entertained the children as well.

I must admit everyone did a great job there today. Would like to mention the joker’s contribution in particular. All of us liked jokers as kids and some of us still do (Nope!! Not the Batman’s nemesis guys..). Initially, when the games began, the children were a l’il reluctant. But then the joker, with his amazing story-telling skills (he narrated Tarzan’s story to the children through a picture book), got them into the groove. You did a great job dude!!

Thanks to SRF and thanks to all the coordinators, volunteers and contributors, this Valentines Day I got, not one, not two, but TWENTY-EIGHT sweet, little Valentines. Team SRF!! You organized and managed MUSKAAN very well. Thanks Guys!!!

Signing off with the hope that we were able to put a l’il MUSKAAN on the children’s face.

We are 'THE' MBAs!!

The 'markets' are REAL BAD these days!! And (almost!! I stress.. ALMOST!!) everyone knows about it... Be it the home-maker who goes to the local grocery store/veggie corner to buy the supplies or the stock investor who's becoming increasingly stinky (profuse sweating you know, watching the volatile 'markets'!! :) ).

But who would know the market conditions better than the Grads passing out next year!! ;) The big names in the industry have either:

  • Been taken over by their (slightly) healthier (??) counterparts, or
  • Frozen their recruitment, or
  • (like in the Indian context) are just being cautious.

Don't worry guys.

We are 'THE' MBAs!!

We will bounce back from this one too.. (don't know how.. Let's just hope things would soon fall in place. ;) )

Here's something to cheer you guys up (Was lyin in ma mailbox for sometime now) :)

The Day After!!

November 26, 2008:

A Black Day in Indian History. A group of terrorists attacked various places in Mumbai, held hostage hundreds of people.

Police was summoned in huge numbers, Army and MARCOS (MARine COmmandoS) were called in, NSG Commandos were flown in. And the fight between the Good & the Evil went on for over 48 hours. And FINALLY, as was expected, the Good won over the Ugly.

But the price had been paid. Over 150 people had died and more than 300 injured. I sincerely pray for the souls of the dead to rest in peace. May God provide their family members with courage to face this grim situation bravely. I also wish a speedy recovery to all the injured...

This drama saw one more casualty. Yes.. I am talking about one of the landmarks of Mumbai. It is also one of the Heritage Buildings of India. When one visits the Gateway of India, one is awed by the beauty of The Taj Mahal Palace & Tower. This Hotel, completed in 1903, has now stood witness to one of the goriest dramas in recent Indian history.

To any Mumbaikar, The Taj Mahal Hotel is a symbol of pride. As for the past one-and-a-half years, I have been in Mumbai, this building has taken a special place in my heart too. So today once I came to know that the siege at the hotel was over, I along with a friend of mine decided to go see the place.

The Hotel looked severely charred at two places - at the front and the other at its side. From what was visible on the outside, it seemed as if the building had absorbed much of the brutality without much damage to itself. But the extent of real damage can't be gauged from the outside.

Below are a few pics that I took on my visit to the fateful site today:

The Taj Hotel Standing Tall

The Charred Portion at the Hotel-front

The charring on the side of the building is visible at the top right of the old building. The New building didn't seem to have borne much brunt

All the vessels at the Gateway have been moored

Swarm of media vehicles present at the site (only a few could be captured though)

I know! All the scars cannot be camouflaged. But I wish that this one, and I mean not just the building, but the scars that this whole episode of terrorism has caused heals real soon. Hope Peace returns to this land and to other lands as well....

Silsila yeh bloggin ka

A Time Long Long Ago, yours truly had once embarked on a journey called blogging.

If I remember it correctly, silsila yeh bloggin ka started around 2 years ago.. Yes!! the journey continued till a few posts. and then what?? As usually happens with me, I started chasing other interests. Huff!!!

Now once again, the ghost (of bloggin) has started haunting me and has caught up with me.

So here I come and hope this interest lingers around me a l'il longer this time around. :)

Signing off now with a promise to be back with a post in the next 24 hours.

Cheers..
